Set-top boxes: Is it environmentally friendly? Read more to find
More and more people have been using set-top boxes as the beating heart of our home entertainment centers, giving hours of excitement and never-ending enjoyment from the greatest of television. It has been evident over the last few years that we can do better when it comes to set-top-box energy usage reduction.
Energy citations
These boxes typically consume between 8 and 25 watts. A basic set-top box without a DVR (digital video recorder) consumes approximately 8 watts of power and can consume approximately 70 units per year if left on for 24 hours. These have standard definition and DVR, as well as with high definition but no DVR, consume approximately 18 watts of power, equating to approximately 158 units per year if left on for 24 hours. A high-definition set-top box with DVR consumes approximately 25 watts of power, which equates to approximately 219 units if left on 24 hours a day for an entire year.
It has been noticed that set top boxes consume about the same amount of power when in use and when not in use (if left powered on), resulting in electricity leakage. Although this may appear unpleasant due to the time required to start, if energy conservation is a goal, it should be turned off from the power outlet when not in use.
CISCO agreement
Cisco has engaged in a strong debate with energy activists, television providers, other equipment manufacturers, and, eventually, the Department of Energy (DoE) to determine if a consensus on set-top box energy efficiency could be reached. Today, we are glad to announce the formation of a voluntary agreement.
This agreement maintains the highest possible standard of consumer television viewing while significantly reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This is a historic agreement that benefits consumers, the environment, and manufacturers and providers alike by providing regulatory certainty.
This deal will save consumers at least $1 billion per year in energy expenses, 500 megawatts of energy per year (enough energy to run 4 million light bulbs year-round), and reduce the release of five million tonnes of CO2 per year.
It requires pay television providers to supply energy-efficient set-top boxes to at least 90% of all subscribers nationally. Additionally, Cisco and other manufacturers are committed to developing, manufacturing, and distributing set-top boxes and multifunctional gateways that fulfil demanding energy efficiency criteria while delivering the anytime, anywhere, any device video experience consumers have grown to expect.
Cisco is happy with this partnership and looks forward to offering cleaner, greener set-top boxes to our customers so that we can all resume our regularly scheduled programming.
Final words
Unlike other businesses, this is one of the goods that has undoubtedly been a hit during the epidemic, with worldwide market data forecasting $20 billion in revenue by 2028. These concerns were exacerbated by supply chain disruptions that harmed global trade.
However, the researchers forecast consistent growth when the pandemic subsides and commerce recovers, with growth occurring in the majority of regions. So, if you haven’t tapped on one, you can easily be a part of the set box family and be a member of continuous entertainment.
